Signal book and log, 1804 July 4-1809 March 1.

Volume is a profusely illustrated (in color) reference compendium of communication protocol at sea. Notable features of volume include: Present distinguishing no. for ships of the Navy--in total 769 numbers appear, most have names of ships cited; plan for a new marine telegraph for short distances; record of temperature in Cawnpore at sunrise, at noon in sun, at noon in shade, and at sunset, 21 April 1806-1 March 1809. Log portion of volume begins 4 July 1804, England towards Madras. Total distance sailed in 14,708 miles. Journal continues through 1 March 1809 and includes a detailed map of the Hooghly River showing Dutch, Danish, English, and French settlements. Also included are descriptions of local wildlife ( 2 feathers from a large bird inserted in book) and description of a military skirmish noting those killed and wounded. Searles Wood, captain.
